Acute gastroenteritis

Condition

  • Acute Gastroenteritis
Potential causes
  • Rotavirus and adenovirus
  • Bacterial: C. jejuni and Salmonella sp, E. Coli and Shigella
  • Protozoal: G. Lamblia, E. histolytica, Cryptosporidium 
  • Food poisoning: staphylococcal toxin 
Investigation
  • No investigation is usually required if < 7 days
  • if > 7 days, send Stool MCS

Management
  • Invariably a self-limiting problem
  • No antibiotic is required
  • If antibiotic is required, wait for culture
