Idiopathic thrombocytopenia purport

Condition

  • Immune destruction of platelets
Clinical features
  • easy bruising
  • epistaxis and menorrhagia common 
  • no systemic illness
  • splenomegaly rare
  • isolated thrombocytopenia
  • other blood cells normal
  • normal physical examination 
  • normal bone marrow with normal or increased megakaryocytic
Murtagh's triad
  • bruising + oral bleeding + epistaxis = ITP

Management
  • no treatment 
  • avoid contact sports
  • watch and wait
  • likely to resolve spontaneously 
  • wide range of practice within Australia. At Westmead children's hospital, they are more pro-watch and wait and avoid treatment
